Kinesio Taping You now see athletes from around the world sporting the brightly colored tape on national television, from Lance Armstrong, to Venus Williams, to Karri Walsh. Kinesio Tex Tape is the official sponsor of the USSA (US Ski and Snowboard Association) and taping techniques were even used on horses during the 2010 Kentucky Derby.
For more than 25 years, Kinesio Tex Tape has been providing a gentler alternative to traditional athletic taping when used for rehabilitation. Developed in Japan in the 1970’s by Dr. Kenzo Kase, Kinesio Tex Tape started making a name for itself in the states during the 1990’s. When 50,000 roles were donated to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the public became aware for the first time what the phenomenon was all about.
While traditional taping methods are still used for joint and muscle stability, ie: taping a sprained ankle before playing soccer, Kinesio Tex Tape can be used to relax tight muscles, help support weaker muscles, help reduce swelling and bruising, reduce pain, assist bio-mechanic corrections, etc. We have used Kinesio tape in our office to effectively treat patients with acute or chronic swelling, muscle contusions, weak muscle activation, patella tracking issue, postural corrections, over use injuries, sprained ribs, pulled hamstrings, and many more.
