Why is sugar so bad?!

by Kristi Acuña BSNU

altDid you know that 2 tsp of sugar lowers your immune system up to 50% for 4 hours? When we ingest sugar into our systems as a part of our regular diet, we are creating a sugar craving that continues to nag at us until we satisfy it for the moment or until the next craving comes on. For most people, after dinner is when their cravings come on and they indulge in a cookie, ice cream, or cake. They figure just a little piece couldn't hurt. When you add up a few bites here and there everyday, it's taxing on your body's systems. Even after one day, your body starts looking at sugar like it's a constant destructive disturbance. It takes your body 14 days to detoxify toxic waste and material that you have eaten over time.

Enable images!Massage has existed for centuries. As human beings, we have a natural instinct to "rub away pain". There’s no denying the power of massage. Regardless of the adjectives we assign to it (pampering, rejuvenating, therapeutic) or the reasons we seek it out (a luxurious treat, stress relief, pain management), massage can be a powerful ally in your healthcare regimen.

Getting to the Core

by Joseph M. Zappala D.C.

Enable images! When you hear the word chiropractor, it usually conjures up some pre-conceived notions and ideas. Back jockey, bone crusher, to name a few. Not all chiropractors practice the same way or use the same techniques or have the same philosophy. At South West Health, our philosophy is to perform an assessment to determine the root cause or core of your particular health issue. Once we have identified the cause, then we put together a plan to bring resolution to the problem quickly and efficiently.

Increased ACL Injury Risk in Female Athletes

By Dr. Jason W. Amstutz

Enable images!ACL injuries are common, costly and potentially debilitating. It is estimated that 95,000 new ACL injuries occur each year (1 in every 3000 persons). Those individuals who suffer an ACL injury and undergo surgical intervention face a lengthy rehabilitation process ranging from 6 to 36 months.

The rate of ACL injury is greater in females than males, especially in younger individuals. As the number of females participating in competitive and recreational activity continues to increase, the number of females sustaining ACL injury can be expected to increase. Thus, ACL injury prevention programs should target females who are at greatest risk.
The majority of ACL injuries involve no contact with another athlete and these injuries are more common in females.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

This highly effective system of health care is based on natural laws, which govern the movement of vital life giving "chi ". Chi moves through the body in precise channels supporting functions of the body, mind, and spirit. When the chi is moving disharmoniously, imbalance begins to surface in the form of specific symptoms. To address the underlying cause of a condition, these symptoms are viewed in relationship to the totality of a person. The gentle insertion of hair thin needles at specific points along the channels of chi energy, help restore harmony. In the presence of this subtle yet profound intervention, symptoms often resolve and patients frequently experience renewed vitality.
