Spinal decompression is often misunderstood. It gets confused with traction. The two words are not interchangeable. Spinal traction is an outdated technique to treat disc injuries. Modern technology uses an innovative process to achieve much better treatment outcomes for spinal disc injuries than traction used to.  This technology is called IDD therapy which we will explain here.

Intervertebral Differential Dynamics Therapy is a highly precise computer applied regimen which utilizes treatment forces to manipulate specific spinal segments. IDD Therapy is administered through the Accu-SPINA, a state-of- the- art computer directed spinal rehab system. When properly administrated, the treatment is able to achieve several objectives. First, unloading compressed spinal segments helps reduce built-up pressure on the affected disc. IDD therapyThis is primary in relieving and resolving the pain. The nature of the cyclical graduating wave form also creates a spinal pumping effect inducing a vacuum within the disc and oxygen flow essential to the disc health. Finally, a secondary modality called oscillation is delivered to the surrounding muscle tissue working to release and re-educate guarded muscle spasms. All this is performed while you rest comfortably in a soothing glow of light, listening to relaxing music. A heated massage bed feature assures that you will complete your treatment session feeling refreshed.

Patients often ask if spinal decompression hurts. The treatment actually is relaxing and is not painful, but treating a disc injury requires patience. The decompression process is a gradual one. The intensity of the pull on the spine has to ramped up slowly  to allow the guarded tight muscles to relax. Prior to beginning decompression, the muscles around the inured disc are very tight and stiff. They are tight for a reason...to protect the injured disc. IDD therapyAs the disc starts to improve, the muscles gradually start to relax since they do not need to protect the disc as much. As the back or neck starts to relax, the intensity of the pull increases until eventually the disc bulge has been reduced to a point where it is not contacting the nerve root or spinal cord any more. At this point, patients' are out of pain and ready to start the rehabilitative phase of spinal decompression. This is where you are prescribed a specific set of exercises to strengthen the core muscles if you have a lower back disc injury or neck and postural exercises if you have a disc injury in your neck. The therapy is administered by Dr. Frank Acunia our physical therapist who also is a chiropractor.  For more information on spinal decompression, how it works and how it can help you, please contact  Dr. Zappala.

Our Costa Mesa chiropractors specialize in sports injuries and use manual chiropractic and functional medicine techniques to treat our patients. At South West Health, the treatment focuses on restoring proper functional range of motion to joints and muscles by breaking up adhesions in muscles. Once the pain has been eliminated, the focus shifts upstairs to our state of the art fitness facility. Here is where the work is done to strengthen and rehabilitate the muscles necessary to stabilize the injured area or areas. If you have a sports injury, we are well equipped to evaluate, diagnose and treat that injury in an efficient cost effective manner. Our sports chiropractors understand your sport and  the need to return quickly because we are athletes too. If you have a sprained ankle, sore shoulder, elbow or knee, we are your best bet for getting back in the game.

Injuries Treated

*ankle sprains

*knee injuries

*hip bursitis

*rotator cuff injuries

*tennis elbow

*golfers elbow

*wrist injuries

How often do I need to come in?

At South West Health, our chiropractors determine the frequency of visits by the severity and nature of your condition. For example, if a patient presents with a sore shoulder, the type of injury to the shoulder will help determine how often that patient will need to be seen. If a patient comes to us neck stiffness and soreness without referred pain down their arms, their treatment plan may call for treatment twice per week for 2-3 weeks. If a patient presents with lower back pain complicated by pain, numbness and tingling in their leg, the treatment may be 3 times per week for 6-8 weeks. No two patients respond the same, that is why we custom tailor our treatment to the individual. When you have recovered from the condition that brought you to our office, you are released from care for that condition. We find that this type of treatment empowers our patients to help themselves and provides a great education to the community of Costa Mesa. Too many chiropractic centers focus on keeping patients coming back week after week for the same treatments. At South West Health, the treatment evolves as patients improve. As an example, a patient may present to our Costa Mesa facility complaining of knee pain and once that is resolved, we may start dealing with weight management which may evolve into sports performance.

Maintenance Care

Maintenance care is a misunderstood term in the chiropractic profession. At our Costa Mesa office, care is based on need. In other words, when is the body ready to be re-evaluated. The frequency of the care for our patients is based on several key criteria including but not limited to:

a) fitness level
b) age
c) diagnosis

This type of care is proactive as opposed to reactive and is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle.(i.e. 8 hours of sleep per night, eating 4-6 small meals per day, exercising daily)

Each patients individual concerns are addressed initially to determine whether there are injuries to be addressed or simply a desire to enjoy a healthier lifestyle.

Treatments Used

We use a variety of methods in house to assess each patients current health and fitness levels, including:

  • Functional chiropractic evaluation
  • Orthopedic Testing
  • Neurological Testing
  • 3D imaging sports performance evaluation
  • X-rays
  • Nutritional Testing
  • Saliva Testing

Our treatments are vast an can include: chiropractic and osteopathic manipulation, active release techniques, Graston techniques, Trigenics, sports performance and efficiency protocols and many others.

In the event, that a patient needs care that can not be delivered here at our office, we work directly with a large network of chiropractors, orthopedic surgeons, neurologists, neurosurgeons, naturopaths, and integrative medicine doctors to insure that your needs are met. We refer out for other diagnostic testing that is not available at our Costa Mesa facility such as MRI, CT scans etc.

Our philosophy is to custom tailor services because no two people have the same needs. Once we identify the root cause of the problem, we can deliver care in a more effective manner.

altDigital X-ray has come to Costa Mesa!! We are able to image the body in either the upright position using a wall mounted bucky or in the recumbent position via a 4-way float table, usually found in hospitals. This enables us to image extremities and to perform non-weight bearing radio graphs accurately, comfortably and most importantly safely.

What do I do after I have been in a car accident?

1. Get other parties insurance information, license plate number and all contact information, including place of employment.
2. If your injuries are severe, allow the ambulance to take you to the hospital for an evaluation.
3. Follow up with your personal chiropractor for further evaluation and assessment.

It is important when initiating treatment following an accident or injury, that treatment start as close as possible to the occurrence of the injury. Treatment is broken down in to three phases starting with acute or intensive care, followed by subacute care, and rehabilitative care.

Remember to apply ice to the injured area as soon as possible following an injury. This will start reducing the inflammation and accelerate the healing process.

Rules for Ice

Ice should never be applied directly to the skin. (Exception: Unless the the ice is being moved around as in an ice massage. In that case, stop icing once the area is numb.)
Ice for 15-20 minutes maximum out of each hour for adults and 10-15 minutes for children.
If ice increases the pain, you may be  experiencing muscle spasms. If that is the case, alternate hot and cold. 10 minutes of moist heat followed by 10 minutes of ice.

South West Health Professional Center of Costa Mesa uses #1 cold laser in Europe

Cold laser therapy, or low level laser therapy, is a treatment in which a cold laser is used to treat acute and chronic pain. It is also called a "soft laser." All light has an effect on the cells of the human body. What that effect is shall be determined by the wavelengths of light applied. The cold laser produces a beam of light that has a specific wavelength and frequency. When the light of the Laser is applied around a joint the electromagnetic energy is converted to chemical energy within each cell which sets in motion a chain of chemical reactions allowing the healing process to begin.

Biostimulation = more oxygen = more circulation= more healing potential = laser light exposure at certain wavelengths near 800 nm stimulate cellular mitochondria (the energy generators) of our cells, to produce more ATP.

More ATP = more energy = more healing

Hemoglobin, our red blood cell pigment absorbs light best at about 800nm wavelength and the most effective "biostimulation" wavelength has been found to be 632-808nm for human tissue.

Conditions Treated

If you suffer from back pain, joint pain, tendonitis, bursitis, fibromyalgia, migraine headaches, neck pain, or other related health conditions, cold laser therapy might be a viable solution for you. Rocktape  is a brand of Kinesio tape that we are starting to use in our office. It is a high performance brand of traditional kinesio tape. It is fantastic for treating common sports injuries like shin splints, plantar fasciitis and runner’s knee. Rocktape also can increase endurance by promoting blood flow during an athletic event. When applied properly, ROCKTAPE lifts the skin away from the muscle, which promotes blood flow. Faster blood flow means more oxygen and more lymph drainage, which helps remove lactic acid. ROCKTAPE can be worn up to 5 days. It is 100% organic cotton and can be worn while swimming or in the shower. Kinesio tape will help promote tissue healing and facilitate movement to get you back in the game. You now see athletes from around the world sporting the brightly colored tape on national television, from Lance Armstrong, to Venus Williams, to Karri Walsh.

Is it a Knot or a Trigger Point?

By Jaemie Ashworth, CMT
Professional Therapeutic and Sports Massage Therapist

Think of that painful spot in your shoulder that just makes your life miserable or perhaps the one in your neck that wakes you up at night.   Touching these places feels hard and painful.  We often refer to these nasty trouble makers as “knots” because they often feel like a knot when we touch them.
These knots are actually trigger points.

EASY, AFFORDABLE AND EFFECTIVE SOLUTION

ZenoLink is a cutting-edge biomechanics analysis and training tool used by athletes of all levels to improve athletic performance – through the power of 3-D! By zeroing in on what’s really happening during an individual’s sports activity, ZenoLink provides athletes, coaches and trainers – primarily in golf, baseball, cycling, lacrosse, hockey, softball, volleyball, tennis and running– an easy and affordable solution that dramatically improves performance and reduces the risk of injury.

Using specialized 3-D Motion Analysis, ZenoLink captures data related to functional movement, and turns it into a digital model of the athlete’s motion, taking the guesswork out of identifying flaws or restrictions in coordination.·

SIMPLE, ACCESSIBLE AND TECHNICALLY POWERFUL: HOW ZENOLINK WORKS

  • Step 1: Collect Data. The athlete is filmed in their natural athletic environment, hitting a golf ball or baseball, serving a tennis ball, firing a lacrosse shot. The process is easy – without the use of sensors, wires or a vest.
  • Step 2: Data Analysis. The video is made into a 3-D model of the athlete at the ZenoLink performance lab in Endicott, NY. Their biomechanical engineers interpret the movement of the model using specialized software to gather measurements including kinetic linking, joint range of motion, body segment coordination and outcome parameters.
  • Step 3: Get Results! ZenoLink provides the athlete with a specialized Progressive Skills Training (PST) program that targets specific areas to help them get dramatic results toward improving their athletic potential and reduce their chances of injury. Athletes, coaches and trainers can access their results on zenolink.com to incorporate the PST program into their current strength and conditioning routines.·

WHY USE ZENOLINK?

Every athlete is different. More than just height, weight, body type, attitude or strength, no two athletes engage the functional movements of their sport the same way. Therefore, ZenoLink knows there is no one-size-fits-all solution to maximizing performance. This sets them apart from other training “experts” who apply generic training solutions or try to solve performance problems through simple observation.

Before the introduction of ZenoLink, advanced functional movement analysis was available only to sports performance researchers and professional athletes in an expensive lab setting. ZenoLink provides athletes of every level with easy and affordable access to PhD-level performance analysis through the power of 3-D.

THE TEAM

Chris Welch has studied and worked with hundreds of athletes, coaches, trainers, sports instructors, and sports medicine practitioners to develop the technological power behind ZenoLink. He started his journey after graduating from Boston University doing research at the American Sports Medicine Institute in 1991 and continued his work at the BioMotion Foundation until he started his own practice in 1995. For the past 15 years, his life’s work as a biomedical engineer has been dedicated to new discoveries in biomechanics, developing the analysis software behind ZenoLink, and advancing the state of the art of clinical biomechanics.

George Bock, longtime friend since their Little League baseball and high school football days, runs the business side of ZenoLink. Together, Chris and George are carrying on a tradition of technological innovation spawned in their hometown of Endicott, NY, birthplace of IBM. George is a graduate and three-year football letterman of Albany State University, and has since specialized in operations, accounting/finance, and information technology during his professional career.

Cyclist Performance in Costa Mesa

Want to improve your performance on the bike? Costa Mesa's South West Health has partnered with ZenoLink which uses 3D motion analysis to gather research-level information about a cyclist’s peddling efficiency simply by videotaping that cyclist in action. ZenoLink’s proprietary software breaks down the video and produces a performance profile, which measures how effectively the cyclist utilizes peak speed output – his/her power potential. By measuring elements such as hip speed and leg speed, ZenoLink creates separate analyses of kinetic linking, stability and muscular loading. These are used to identify functional movement discrepancies that rob the cyclist of power, and to design a personalized Progressive Skills Training program that addresses those problem areas.
Below is a sample performance profile. This is the type of information that is generated from the 3D analysis. The information allows us to create specialized protocols called P.S.T. or progressive skills training. These PST's will improve the cyclists coordination and make them more efficient, leading to faster race times. For more information, contact us at 949-631-5226 Ext 10. www.3dsportsanalytics.com

Increased ACL Injury Risk in Female Athletes

alt

ACL injuries are common, costly and potentially debilitating. It is estimated that 95,000 new ACL injuries occur each year (1 in every 3000 persons). Those individuals who suffer an ACL injury and undergo surgical intervention face a lengthy rehabilitation process ranging from 6 to 36 months.

Unfortunately, surgical intervention does not ensure a return to previous activity levels. Only 75 percent of these individuals return to their previous activity levels. Moderate to severe disability is reported in individuals suffering from ACL injury during walking activities, routine activities of daily living, and sport activities. The outlook is worse for individuals who do not undergo surgical intervention following ACL injury.

Our 21 day cleanse is a great way to lose weight and feel great! purification

What is purification?

Purification is merely the internal cleansing and detoxification of your body. Think of it as “spring cleaning” for your insides.
It requires making new, healthier choices for you.  You’ll learn to refrain from eating fast foods, processed convenience foods, and sugar-laden snacks, which place an unnecessary load on our body.

Beauty Q&A with Helen Andreos - Former National Lancome Brow and Skincare Specialiste

The Brow Specialiste
Photo: Courtesy of Helen Andreos

Helen Andreos in a past life was the National Brow Specialiste for the house of Lancome. During her early career as the national brow and skincare specialiste for Lancome Cosmetics, Helen participated at various award shows such as the Oscars, Emmy Awards and the MTV Video Music Awards. Renowned Nationwide Helen has a Celebrity Clientele list adding Angela Basset, Nelly Furtado, Kathy Bates and Debra Messing among them.

Helen was gracious and took time out of her busy schedule to give me an interview and talk about how to achieve fabulous Brows.

Anita: How did you get started in the brow/skincare business?

Helen: Passion - I was 17 years old when I started grooming my own brows and using skincare. Grooming my brows was difficult, but with practice I mastered it and now its become second nature. I love sharing my knowledge with women, I love helping women achieve gorgeous healthy brows and skin.

Anita: How do you feel about permanent eyebrow tattoos?

Helen: If it's done correctly it can be beautiful - you need to make sure that the balance, length, and color are right. I recommend doing research and finding a professional tattoo artist.

Anita: What are your favorite brow products and why?

Helen: Revitabrow is my absolute favorite - I know they don't make claims that they promote eyebrow growth, but I've seen results on my clients and on myself. Revitabrow creates thicker, fuller brows. Another great product is the Lancome Pencil to Powder, there isn't anything else out there like it, truly an amazing product - it has the precision of a pencil but the softness of a powder, it's not harsh but soft and natural. Eyebrows shouldn't be dramatic unless you are doing Runway or Photography.

Anita: Do you recommend threading or waxing?

Helen: You can't get the precision with threading or waxing, you are in danger of removing too much, you can only achieve precision with tweezing.

Anita: Why do you think most women over tweeze?

Helen: Because they don't know what they are doing, you need a professional and artistry products to fill in, define and to give proper color and balance.

Anita: I recently read in a magazine article that there are some people who shave their eyebrows - what's your take on that?

Helen: Shaving eyebrows is very bad! Eyebrows have a tendency not to grow back if they are continually shaved or tweezed.

Anita: With so many tweezers available - which is your favorite?

Helen: The Cricket - it lasts longer, grabs hair better and needs less maintenance. You can purchase it at any Beauty Supply Store.

Anita: Okay - the Question I've been dying to ask you, what's in your famous eyebrow kit?

Helen: My Cricket Tweezer, Jane Iredale brushes, Jane Iredale Concealers, Jane Iredale brow gels, and Revitabrow.

Anita: I recently started testing the bitty brow kit by Jane Iredale and I love it, have you seen it yet?

Helen: No, not yet. I'm constantly testing new products on myself before I incorporate the ones that work into my brow kit. What's the bitty brow kit like?

Anita: It's travel size and comes with clear wax, brunette powder, three mini brushes and a tiny mirror. At first I was intimidated by the wax, but after our many conversations I managed to figure out how to use the product and now I can't put it down, my eyebrows look more natural!

Helen: I'm going to have to take a look at it, I love Jane Iredale.

Anita: I love Jane Iredale products too, it's the skincare makeup! I know you're very busy with work and that once you get home its Danny's time, but I have a few more questions. Any last minute words of wisdom?

Helen: Beautiful and healthy skin combined with healthy brows will give anyone a more pulled together look - everything comes together when you have healthy brows, and if you need help growing your brows I recommend Revitabrow, it's a great way to start, and go to a professional! Waxing, and tweezing are difficult to do on your own.

Anita: Revitabrow was the first eyebrow treatment I tested and I highly recommend it too, are there any new beauty products you want to share with us?

Helen: I recently discovered a great mineral makeup line by La Bella Donna and an amazing suncare line by Color Science, I'm very excited about them.

Anita: Thank you Helen - I can't wait to visit you at your Brow & Skincare Studio!
